TIPS for Active Wear

1. Don't wear active wear that is too tight. It's not comfortable nor will you feel confident. The right fit will make it easier to feel strongly about hitting the gym or courts.

2. Leggings are not pants. Always wear a long tee or tank to cover your girlie area, as well as wearing proper undergarments and sports bra. Support and function are key elements.

3. Don't be afraid to get a bit colorful. Happy bright colors get you motivated and excited. They are mood elevators.

4. It's important to invest money in the proper pair of shoes for your activity of choice. In the long run being stylish feels awesome, but taking care of your body is the real motivation.

Underwater fashion styling is something else... many stylists know that when you take a picture of a garment all the elements of photography, environment, hair, makeup and styling can change that garment into something different. And when you add the element of water its a whole lot more transformative. Not to mention its hard on the clothes and jewelry especially which pond of water you're shootingin.We had to take extra care with the wardrobe and what was okay to put into the water and what was most likely going to be destroyed. Regardless, I loved the outcome of these images by the very talented Mallory Morrison and she is so much fun to work with. So excited to see these images published again in another magazine. Well deserved!!!

Polyvore, is such a great site to play around on for those who like putting together inspirational fashion boards or those who like to enjoy them. I particularly like this one with Victoria Beckham, she is classically tailored chic yet so modern. And her baby girl is just too adorable in her complimentary outfit. This style for me reads very transitionally for the bi-polar seasons, especially for someone who travels so much. Here in Los Angeles its December and almost 70 degrees, so the look is perfect for traveling across the pond and back.

Overwhelmed with mounds of clothing, shoe boxes, and supplies? The Soopl Fashion Trolley is the fashion industry's solution to a sturdy yet portable rolling rack. It can be be used to hang a number of garment bags while a durable shelf down below can house boxes, plastic bins, you name it!

Arjan Kaan, designer of the convenience rack, devised this concept while working as an account manager for a Dutch fashion brand. He hated the inconvenience of the existing large, bulky rolling racks; therefore attempting to replace them with much smoother, transportable ones. The Fashion Trolley can be pulled along bumpy pavement and other uneven surfaces.

Based on my first hand experience with Soopl during Los Angeles CONCEPT Fashion Week, it was nothing but smooth sailing. Our team of girls packed the rack to the brim with everything one could possibly need to manage a runway show and came in handy during backstage chaos. When we were done with the rack, it easily collapsed for manageable carrying and storage. The Soopl Fashion Trolley was built to make all of our fashion lives easier!

While doing some online research for a client, I was totally inspired by the hair styles (clip in's too) and visual presentation on the Hersheson's website. All and all very well done!!! Here's the scoop on this well designed, nicely branded eCommerce, and brick and mortar hair company. Started by The Daniel Hersheson, his brand first sprang onto the fashion map during the early Nineties with the opening of its flagship Conduit Street store.

With its particular brand of stealth styling the salon quickly became a favourite with models, celebrities and press. Revolutionary products such as the first professional straightening iron soon followed before the arrival of a luxury hair spa in Harvey Nichols and then in 2006, the launch of the ultimate in accessible hair and fashion, Hersheson’s Blow Dry Bar in Topshop, Oxford Circus. At the core of the brand is an ethos which acknowledges that hairdressing is continuallly evolving and likewise the company refuses to stand still.

2010 has seen the launch of new Hersheson hair accessories and products available online and in-store as well as the opening of the third Blow Dry Bar in the City in October.

‘Scouted’, the new E Channel reality show follows scouts as they take on the process of finding unknowns and turning them into bona fide fashion models, premiered on Monday November 28th to very positive reviews. One of the modeling scouts featured on the show, former model and fashion stylist Erin Olson of Salt Lake City, Utah, was kind enough to sit down with me to answer a few questions about ‘Scouted’.

Q: What is the show ‘Scouted’ all about?
A: ‘Scouted’ highlights the process of taking regular girls from obscurity and turning them into fashion models. Newly scouted girls are flown to New York City where they are styled for a shoot, and then possibly selected to be a part of “One Management”, a Top 10 modeling agency.

Q: Who are some of the key characters we will be introduced to when watching ‘Scouted’?
A: ‘Scouted’ focuses on 3 main groups of people who are the scouts, the models and the experts. The scouts include Page Parkes, Kristen Kotik, Stacie Vanchieri and me, Erin Olson, the experts include Creative Director Michael Flutie, President of One Management Scott Lipps, Model Mentor Beri Smither, Director of Scouting Julia Samersova and Image and Styling Consultant Dani Stahl. (The aspiring models will be revealed on the show.) People can also check out the E Channel’s website for complete cast bios.

Q: How did you get involved in the production of ‘Scouted’?
A: Michael Flutie, the creator of ‘Scouted’, was looking for Top 10 Agency modeling scouts in North America to be featured on the show. I was recommended by some of the agencies I’ve scouted for as well as by my partner Trudi Tapscott of ‘Trudi Tapscott Model Management’.

Q: As a former fashion stylist, how did you transition into a model scout?
A: I started out as a model in New York City back in 1996 which really sparked my initial interest in the fashion industry. Over time I naturally transitioned into sales and buying and soon thereafter came fashion styling, which I loved doing. I got into model scouting because all of these job opportunities taught me what to look for in an aspiring model as well as what designers are looking for, which equips me to be a very effective model scout.

Q: In what ways has your past styling experience helped in scouting models?
A: As a fashion stylist, and as a model, I learned which styles look relevant and what an agency is really looking for in their girls. As a model I learned what a model should look like without make-up, it’s not typically the obvious girl who makes a successful model.

Q: What can viewers who are in the fashion industry learn from watching scouted?
A: Typically, the people who work in fashion are involved in a specific niche and haven’t had much experience in other areas of the industry. ‘Scouted’ offers a different perspective by showing what it’s really like for the models. It humanizes them and shows that they aren’t just another pretty face.

Q: What makes ‘Scouted’ a show to watch?
A: I love that the show reveals the true process of scouting. It’s not a competition show, instead ‘Scouted’ focuses on all that it takes to find, prepare and develop the girls into models. No other show has depicted modeling from this perspective.

Have you heard of the Los Angeles Fashion Council? What... there is a Los Angeles Fashion Council, yup! There is now and guess who is involved...

Devon Poer and Kelsi Smith have united their skill sets to create the Los Angeles Fashion Council, the goal of which is to elevate and support Los Angeles fashion design through a unified council of key individuals within the industry. Our goal is to elevate and support Los Angeles fashion design through a unified council, providing a platform for presentation on a local, national and international level, as well as education, funding and support.

The Los Angeles Fashion Council is launching our first in a long line of programming today with London Calling. We aim to send five designers to London this coming February for a three day trade and salon style show. The purpose of which is to educate and inform the European market of the immense talent we are nurturing in Los Angeles.

Four talented Los Angeles based designers have been pre-selected to go to London; Mila Hermanovski, Bryan Hearns, Alana Hale and Curly V - the last spot will be filled through a Facebook contest launching today. The ten designers with the most votes will be judged by a panel of esteemed members of the Los Angeles fashion industry and one will be selected to join us in London alongside a $1000 grant. Designers can submit their work for the contest on our Facebook and fans can vote their favorite through January 10th.

In order to fund our project we have launched a Kickstarter page. Anyone can donate any amount to the cause - and donations greater than $25 receive rewards from limited edition sketches, reclaimed cashmere scarves by Mila Hermanovski, an Alana Hale dress, Bryan Hearns jewelry, new designs from Curly V and much more. The full list of reward levels and rewards can be seen on the Kickstarter page.

Lead by design-duo Dotan and Osi Shoham the collection pays homage to the elements through a vibrant earth-toned color palette, mixed with fiery prints. Luxe fabrics, lace insets and asymmetrical hemlines add a whimsical elegance, while fringe accents, belted detailing and paisley patterns offer something new for the women's collection.

Immediately following the runway show we were in for a treat as the music of Bad Decisions, featuring Jaco Caraco (Miley Cyrus), Todd Morse (The Offspring) on Guitar, Alex Mercier on keyboard, Bryce Soderberg (Life House) and Jeremy Piven on drums.

#LAFW @DirectivesWest First. LA Fashion Show

Always an upbeat show, Directives West First.LA kicked off market week last Monday evening at the California Market Center. The Show began by highlighting for seasonal trend directions including Social Heritage, World Treasures, The Sophisticate, and Rapture. With the compilation of contemporary looks highlighting trend in the Spring/Summer 2012 season, the focus was on the continuation of the androgynous west coast aesthetic with the use of lightweight fabrics and sheers but many emerging trends from the Paris and Milan runways of full feminine skirts with the futuristic hourglass silhouettes utilizing stiff jacquard's and matelassés were omitted.

The show continued with the presentations of eight individual labels. Several fresh key pieces and design elements were seen throughout these collections including the wide leg pant, an update from the 1970's palazzo, done best by Go.Make.Noise. They presented teh silhouette in a small-scale print chiffon and while the voluminous classic is a welcome alternative to the skinny, buyer - the sheer chiffon pant may need to be left for a day at the beach as the model's behind was in full view!

Denimocracy Denim translated last season's colored denim craze to Tye-dye and patterned cropped denim pants that were paired with graphic tees and tops by Blondes Make Better T-Shirts. One top, entitled "The Ooops Tee" consisted of an uninspired upside down color block pocket on a heather grey jersey-like, gag!

Nearly, all designers showed high low hemlines as a prominent design detail seen in skirts, tops, and jackets. Drapable crepe de chine and georgette fabrics offered the movement and momentum these designs needed. Cameo paired this gradual hem transition with graphic color-blocking created through geometric seaming leaving me with my favorite looks of the night.

Once again, ACE Gallery served as the backdrop and incubator for CONCEPT Fashion Week, with its museum like exhibition space; they provided a beautiful stage for a more artistic showcase from local LA designers. Yet, it's glorious 1930's architecture plays as a delightful backdrop, an inconsistent space to host LA fashion week crowds or survive an LA heat wave. Now, in it's third season new comer CONCEPT has shown to be a less commercialized runway show with designers like Nuvula, S & G, Curly-V, Alana Hale, Bohemian Society by Victor Wilde, Jen Awad, Mike Vensel, Liaison, ISM Mode, Valerji Pobega, Nami, Bryan Hearns, and Thai Nguyen for Spring/Summer 2012.

Unlike the typical front seat report, my encounter of CONCEPT and its designers was much different as the acting backstage manager for day 1 and 2. It was a great opportunity to experience a more intimate encounter with the designers and the talent behind CONCEPT. The multi faceted fashion designer Mike Vensel is the mastermind behind CONCEPT, with beauty sponsors celebrity makeup artist Melanie Mills creator of Gleam, and celebrity hair stylist Aubrey Loots of Studio DNA Salons. With Kelsi Smith, Queen of the LA bloggers, from Two Point OH LA running the door.

One of my many favorites as CONCEPT was Alana Hale....

Alana, an FIDM grad and dedicated Los Angeles designer, and native. Everything is designed and manufactured in Los Angeles. Alana's designs embody the regal Southern California woman, with grace and elegance. Her collection was inspired by "1960's South of France - very Brigitte Bardot with modern silhouettes." After experiencing the collection, one would be lusting over the tan leather skirt, crochet or leopard maxi skirt, and shear blouses; her collections rival that of a blossoming Erin Fetherston.

White Trash Beautiful is really not a name you would accompany with elegance, however bring in some Nikki Rich and WTB becomes a whole new ball game. WTB is the collaboration of Nikki Lund and Richie Sambora, which has really been an interested collection since its inception, yet I must admit I was turned off by the name in the beginning. Yet the only WTB you could find in the collection is the large amount of leather in the past, however the Spring collection, Nikki Rich by WTB was full of feminine fabrics, bold colors and lose cuts. Furthermore, the grace carried in the garments transcend to a more sophisticated woman with a bold sense of color who could wear her outfit during the working day and into the evening. Furthermore, the California flare and need for transitional clothing.

The evening began with a performance by the talented Kimberly Caldwell, then a fashion show of models including Grace Lazenby, as they glided down the curved stairwell of the W Hotels lobby bar. Finally, Nikki and Richie debuts some of their new work together and their anthem for WTB. For those of you who don't know everything... here is the scoop on Nikki Lund and Richie Samboro.

Nikki is a California native best know for clothing line Eccentric Symphony and band Secret Mind. Richie Samboro is best know for his positions as lead guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for the legendary rock band Bon Jovi. Richie is very much involved with all the designs that make up White Trash Beautiful. Which was originally a song Richie and Jon had written together that hence became more suited for the fashion industry in Los Angeles.

In the city of Angel's Fashion Week is more like Fashion Week(s), with so many productions taking place in the city its hard to catch the entire runway parade while it takes over the studios of Hollywood and downtown's Fashion District. This season I'm delighted to be reporting on multiple shows for FashionWeekLA.com, LIVE Los Angeles Magazine, TSH Blog and this blog "The Fashion Journalist."

The Week(s) technically started last week with CONCEPT opening on Thursday, October 13th. As one of the larger productions now on its third season, I was delighted to finalize the day before that I would be their backstage manager and my excitement quickly turned to worry once I saw the state of the backstage space and walked into a heat wave stricken ACE Gallery. Their Wilshire location a 1930's building lacked air conditioning and had minimal air ventilation. As the day went on designers and loads of people started pouring into the gallery which created a sauna of hair, makeup and fashion. Not really the best environment to feel fashionable when you're melting at the seams. The shows however still went on and people piled into the steam room to witness runway shows by some of LA's budding talent. More on this coming soon...

It's inspiring to be apart of something greater then yourself, better yet a cause that really cares about the well being of big and small furry friends. I'm very supportive of any cause that sets out to involved the lives of others, especial animals. Sometimes us humans can act a bit reckless when it comes to the way we treat our planet and those who inhabit it. People who are truly passionate about improving the quality of life for humanity or furry friend is truly working to make a difference for all of us and generations to come.

I was honored to be apart of the Born Free USA fffashion show on Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 in Hollywood at club Wonderland. I had a really fun time styling the eclectic range of wardrobe sent in from designers like Sherri Hill, Dalia MacPhee, Donna Salyer's Fabulous Faux Furs, Yane Mode, KissinCussin, Soreyda Benedit Begley, Rene Geneva, Cri De Coeur, Tea Tree Designs, Imoshion, Pretty Birdie and winning student designer Ashley Cook.

After being involved in this event and further introduced to the work of Born Free USA, what I got is just how serious whats happening to animals around the world. Born Free USA is an animal activist charity that is really about protecting all animals in the world from pet to exotic, fur in fashion and animals in entertainment. Born Free USA's "mission is to end the suffering of wild animals in need, protect wildlife - including highly endangered species - in their natural habitats, and encourage compassionate conservation globally. Our primary campaign areas currently include animals used in entertainment, captive exotic animals, trapping & fur, and the international wildlife trade."

To make a donation to this wonderful cause click here. Word on the street is they will be auctioning off some of the pieces that were in the fashion show!!!

In my opinion the night was a wonderful success, the fashion show rocked, lots of people came out to support the cause and enjoyed the night. My experience backstage with hair and beauty maven Billy Lowe was a love at first sight introduction. Working with the amazing Monica Engebretson and Angela Grimes also is what really made this project that much more rewarding working with wonderfully good people who truly care about their cause. Not to mention the adorable Amy Paffrath who hosted the show and did an amazing job!!! I'm kind of in love with her too. Oh and lastly the ever beautiful "stunning" musician Juilette from 8mm who performed before the show. What can I say, I'm actually a very loving person! Like in Lady Nogrady's song "I got no hate for lovers I really don't but I ain't got no love for haters."

For this years fashion's night out, we (Kyle, Tania and mom), trekked it out to Riverside, CA to celebrate their first fashion show for Fashion's Night Out. I was honored when the ladies at the Art Institute IE asked me to make an appearance and speak at the fashion show. I had a great time including a fantastic meet and greet at Downtowne Books where I signed covers of The Stylist Handbook. I really enjoyed talking to all the people about fashion styling or just about getting dressed.

I go to fashion events in Los Angeles all the time and never have I ever thought of myself as any type of person of interest probably why I'm getting asked to do appearances in Riverside. You gotta start somewhere. Recently, I had to really acknowledge the things I have accomplished and really tell myself good job. I'm really hard on myself and I feel I'm my own worst enemy at times. I think many of us are way too hard on ourselves and can easily love those around us, yet leave no love for ourselves. Its hard to truly let others love you when you don't love yourself. What I've made up my mind about is standing in a space of really, I mean really loving myself and what I do in every aspect of my life. I love my career choice and I don't want to lose focus on what I love doing, neither should anyone else. If we all did what we truly loved, the world would be a better place. Everyone deserves to love their life, even when it throws you a loop, the trick is to enjoy the ride and be open to transformation. That's my two cents!

I'm very excited to be styling the Born Free USA Annual Fashion Show taking place next week Thursday, September 22, 2011 (Happy Bday Lindsay) in Hollywood, CA. FFFashion is a fur free fashion show as well as green and sustainable fashion designers, including students designers who took part in a contest.

St. John finally got it right with the new face of their campaign, Kate Winslet. Previous to Kate was Angelina Jolie, then Karen Elson, who all looked beauty in their campaigns however I feel St. John was missing a key point... Someone who could actually speak for the clothes, that would truth appreciate the brand and the women they serve. I've had St. John in my life quite sometime now due to my sister and mother. Actually, dressed my first celebrity cover in St. John.

The company is based out of Southern California and was once identified as "old lady" clothing, however over the past half decade, St. John has been working towards shedding new light on its designing truth... that they make beautiful clothes, that last forever, for really elegant women. As of now, my third start-up is in full swing, our magazine, The Stylist Handbook. I've read somewhere before (and I wish I could remember where), that entrepreneurs who have tried and failed are more likely to succeed than a first timer. So third times a charm, right?

Getting to the point, I subscribe to a daily email newsletter called DailyWorth.com, and its purpose is to empower women in business, to know what your worth is, because honestly its something many of us struggle with (men and women). I've been battled with properly rating my services for the past couple years as a freelancer and where does it get me? Well, living paycheck to paycheck and in the freelance world the net terms are not really like a corporate job where money comes in every two weeks. And financing your dreams while trying to make ends meet is scary.

Not everyone wants to admit the money dance is difficult regardless if your juggling millions or thousands of dollars. Thank god for all the supportive people or I wouldn't be able to continue my love of being an entrepreneur. Its people like Amanda Steinberg (the founder of Daily Worth), who are on a mission to empower women in the business world. Lets be honest, its a male dominated reality and I'm all for equality, male, women, races, gay, straight.....whatever. How I see it is that we are all HUMAN.

So here is the bottom line, you can not be an entrepreneur without capital and how do most, if not all, businesses get capital? They raise it! Lending and borrowing, it's was makes the economy go round. We are all learning from our mistakes, me especially and knowing my worth is something I don't want to feel ashamed to acknowledge. Or should anyone else!

Kickstarter.com has been on my radar for the past year and now that I feel we have build up a solid product its time for the next step... FUNDING. I'm very passion about our magazine's mission and raising money is the road to fulfilling my dreams while supplying a platform for others to do the same. I find fulfillment and empowerment through empowering others. I love to educate and share, its another reason why I love journalism.

Underwater styling for @Framedshow

I recently styled ANOTHER underwater photo shoot with photographer Mallory Morrison, who is an expert in underwater photography, an artist as well. Our objective was two missions, to be filmed while painting our version of a fashion master piece and creating a fashion spread for jewelry designer by LaShan to be published in a magazine. (Can't tell you which one just yet... but its a 50/50 guest.) So the people filming have an online tv show about... photography, called Framed Show. Its quite the master piece itself. Our shoot will air on session two and they have released a preview. Its time to hit the beach and go underwater!!!

Sources say our episode will be released in August!!

We kicked off the start of our celebrations for The Stylist Handbook, and announced the coming release of Volume 3, on June 11th at Cement Studio in downtown Los Angeles, CA. "Co-publisher Daryl Henderson attended the event with Editor in Chief Devon Poer and sipped cocktails with studio owners Arianne David and Paul Q Davis." The audience was delighted with a fashion show styled by stylist Rodellee Marie and Cara Bloom.

The CEMENT studio is a spacious loft located in the historic American Cement building on Wilshire Boulevard near downtown. It is the perfect venue for photographers looking to shoot in a unique and professional setting. The studio boasts an open floor-plan, high ceilings and dramatic concrete x-bracing. Located on the 11th floor with 40 lineal ft. of floor to ceiling glass the studio overlooks an expansive view of Los Angeles.

I started working with LIVE Orange County, Long Beach and Los Angeles Magazines over a year ago when they were in need of a celebrity stylist. They were refereed to me by my photographer friend Efren Beltran. The relationship with the magazine has just grown and including my contributions as a writer and not just as stylist. To sweeten the deal as of May I am now listed as the Fashion Editor for the publication. My first story as fashion editor focused on trends in business attire and how to wear it. I'm excited to expand on my contributions and tonight I'm heading to OC Fashion Week to write a report for the next issue. It will be great to experience what my home county can do after my rather honest report on LA Fashion Week.

Many girls can say that they have experience with men's styling if they have every had a boyfriend to dress. For me, I started dressing my boyfriends in high school. However, recently I finally was able to style a male actor for the cover of a magazine, this shoot with Simon Helberg from the Big Bang Theory was a treat and lots of fun. I've definitely put my focus more into styling women in the past then men because honestly I've always thought women's clothing is more interested BUT I've really enjoyed all the men's styling I've being doing of late. Taking on the challenge is more rewarding as well because you really have to let your creativity work with your environment and resources. I can never stress enough how important it is to keep your client happy, comfortable and confident. If they don't feel right in their clothes it shows in the pictures, and magazines want happy celebrities!!

This shoot was for LIVE Orange County Magazine with Simon Helberg from the Big Bang Theory. He was so much fun to work with and made my job all that much more enjoyable. The shoot was hosted at aLine Media and we used many of there mens lines, which I love how many they have, Billionaire Mafia, Civic Duty, Dorsia and Counsil to name a few.

In the showroom world of fashion styling I find its harder to find the perfect men's products to use for fashion spreads and showrooms like aLine Media are perfect because of all the product they carry for us fashion stylists!! I kind of feel bad that men don't get to have as much fun getting dressed as women do but do men really enjoy getting dressed as much as women do? Well maybe if their wardrobe's were more fun they would.

Check out all the behind the scenes action from this shoot. Nowadays, photo shoots are also doubled with video and everything is caught on camera so we all need to look and feel our best!!

A fabulous loft space on the tip of the Art walk off Main street and 6th, which is quickly becoming a hip part of town. I love a good networking party and this one was full of positive vibes, and friendly people. It was perfect, there were drinks, music and dessert!! Not your typical dark lounge or loud bar, instead a sunset over racks of clothing and people making new connections. And to sweeten the evening designer collections were displayed for all to see and party favors given out to add to one's wardrobe. This is how I prefer a networking party to be done...

A mountain is that which is my to do list, exceedingly high at the moment and yet I needed a moment, make that over an hours worth, to do just indulge over a glass of wine and surf the fashion network. Not the cable channel, but the network of fashion online, like websites, blogs, such the evolving "digital publication." Which is pushing out content faster then any machine before it!

While surfing the digital pages it dawned on me, this age is moving faster then any other human experience before it. Attributed to the internet... information is so much more accessible, we get it as amazing speeds and yet we want it FASTER!

Hair Stylist and Co-owner of Studio DNA Salon, Aubrey Loots has been doing my hair for over the past year. Last summer, we took things to a new level of excitement dying my boring brown hair to RED. The evolution of my red hair has been a thrilling experience especially because we do something different each time. Trusting your hair stylist is very important anytime you sit down in their chair, all they want is for you to look your best and to get with the times. They are professionals for a reason, they keep up to date with new techniques and trends, so they definitely know their shit, so why wouldn't you let them work there magic. And remember its just hair, it will grow back and can be died back!

Because we live in a society based on pop culture and "trends," I always stress to stay ahead of the curve or set the bar. Express myself within the realm of whats in fashion! When I asked Aubrey about being on/ahead of trend with my hair and staying within the season, because I was concerned my hair should be lighter for the summer with all the sun exposure it will see, here is what he had to say...

"Hair color is certainly seasonal even in LA where seasons are much to be desired! Just because you are a red color client does not mean you can't change up your look for the spring either. There are many types of red. What we like to do is analyze your skin and eye color to help guide us into choosing the RIGHT RED for you. Devon is a perfect example of someone who was able to go from a deep violet cooler based red for the winter to a beautiful lighter copper, warmer based color for the spring. Things to note for red heads - there are two types of reds - cool and warm and both can be done darker or lighter depending on the look you are going for. Some tips for red heads - Do not shampoo your hair everyday and use professional color specific shampoo, like Sebastian or Sojourn that both have several choices to help you maintain great healthy and shiny red colored hair!"

Los Angeles Fashion Week

I've been in Los Angeles for three years now, I grew up in Orange County but about 8 years ago I left to do a bit of exploring. My journey landed me back in my home state in 2008, which is were I want to be for now, I've always been drawn to LA.

During my wondering I kept a close eye on the international runways, my attention to the local fashion scene shifted after my first hands on experience with London Fashion Week. I was hooked on fashion shows! And when I returned to Seattle (which was my home at the time) I was all over the local scene. Evidently, it is what helped furnish my role as a blogger, then founding my first online magazine MyCityChic.com, while dwelling in Seattle.

Moving on, I was very excited to receive the opportunity to express my opinion about Los Angeles Fashion Week for the insider Fashion PR website, PRcouture.com. Being that I first observed a couple different cities runways and have been involved with over a hundred fashion shows thus far, I believe I can shed some light on the dilemma that is LAFW. Please take a look at the story and my perception on LAFW. I hope that my honestly will help others to truly support the driving force of Los Angeles Fashion economy. Charity: Generosity Water's 3rd Annual Event

It was an honor to be apart of the 3rd Annual Generosity Water Fundraiser. I'm so proud of all the people behind the charity especially Jordan Wagner, Michael Muniz and Jason Kennedy, who have taken this event above and beyond each year. This year alone the event raised over $100,000 in donations, a nice improvement from last years $35,000. The work of these boys doesn't stop there, Jordan himself is fully invested in the mission of Generosity Water traveling all over the world to countries in need of our generosity and giving them a voice and a story. During the event they played video from each one of the villages they were raising money for to build wells to provide people with clean water and a brighter future. Its just dumbfounding to realize that 1 billion people in the world do not have access to clean water and how much we as American's in our daily lives take advantage of the luxuries that we possess, especially something as simple as water.

This year, E! personalities Giuliana Rancic and Jason Kennedy hosted Generosity Water's 3rd Annual Night of Generosity at the home of Wayne Kao, music producer, in Los Angeles, California. The event raised over $100,000 for the charity. Generosity Water is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to ending the clean water crisis in developing countries. See video from E! The star-studded event featured live musical performances by A Fine Frenzy and Honor Society. The evening began with a cocktail reception and silent auction, which was followed by a live auction. Guests enjoyed specialty cocktails by Voli Vodka, and gourmet creations by Contemporary Catering.

For this year's silent auction a variety of products were sold with all proceeds to benefit the cause and help provide clean water for people in Haiti, Ghana and India. Silent auction items at this year's gala included: a luxurious Croton Watch, a brunch for two courtesy of the famous Beverly Hills Hotel, a fabulous seven-night Caribbean getaway donated by Elite Island Caribbean Resorts, Genre Hotels donated two-night stays to ten of their boutique hotels, an autographed Marcus Allen jersey, Clipper tickets, VIP table service at TAO & LAVO nightclub, gift certificates from Studio DNA and Ariane Millinery Hats, vintage lingerie from Juel Park, Kao Pao Shu Bags, handbags from the Hemptress, dress by designer Joi Luxe, earrings from Margaret Rowe Jewelry, Shibue Couture, wardrobe consultation with Celebrity Stylist Barbra Horowitz; candles from D.L. & Co Candles, and much more!

Celebrity guests at this year's gala included hosts Giuliana Rancic and Jason Kennedy along with 30 Seconds to Mars' Jared Leto, Twilight's Tinsel Korey, The Real Housewives of New York's Kelly Bensimon, Californication's Madeline Zima, The Hills' Stephanie Pratt & Jayde Nicole, Desperate Housewives' Emily Bergl, Glee's Charlotte Ross, The Hard Times of RJ Berger's Amber Lancaster, The Cape's Izabella Miko, Shameless' Shanola Hampton, Rachel Getting Married's Tamyra Gray, The Lincoln Lawyer's Yari De Leon, and many others.

Beauty: PrettyCity w/ Jane Iredale @LIVEOnSunset

I was recently introduced to prettycity.com by my friend Barbara. She recommended I attend one of their events in West Hollywood last week. Being that I've been a lot more involved with the beauty world I was excited to check it out after looking at their website. What they aim to do is "serve as a destination for savvy spa and salon goers as well as a regional directory of indulgence. All while offering up beauty bargains on everything from massages to manicures, from cosmetics to collagen."

This particular event I attended was a combination of beauty, shopping and treats! The event took place at the very large LIVE! On Sunset Boutique, in the heart of West Hollywood. Inside the boutique were stations with either make-up, skin care, waxing, nail or hair services. Also delicious Sandwiches from Zelda's Corner in Venice and amazing desserts from Chubster.

I took my first appointment with Jane Iredale makeup artist Angela Androtti, who showed me some great products from the line, I was especially interested to hear about the foundation, be it that I have temperamental skin. She explained that the Dream Tint SPF 15 under the PurePressed powder would be perfect for me and demonstrated the amazing coverage it has. My next concern was my dark circles under my eyes which she recommended the Active Light Under - Eye Concealer and also stated that it helps reduce puffiness. After applying it to half my face she handed me the mirror and I could definitely see the difference.

Afterward I was no longer available to wait for another appointment so I walked around to check out the other stations, met the manager, eat some more treats and was on my way. But not empty handed, when I had arrived I received a gift bag with some amazing goodies in it. So far my favorite things from the gift bag is the Lumene Vitamin C+ Nourishing Night Care, the Everyday Mineral Cheek in Wake Up Call and the Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip Plumper in Madrid.

Generosity Water's 3rd Annual Fundraiser

Once again, I am so excited to be apart of the annual fundraiser for charity organization Generosity Water taking place Friday, March 18 in Beverly Hills. I'm so proud to say I have been a supporter on the event for the past three years. For the last two events we did a fashion show and this year they decided to drop the fashion show and really focus on the presentation and musical performances, which honestly I'm excited to get to watch instead of running around dealing with a fashion show, I really want to participate in the whole event instead of being backstage. Don't get me wrong I will get my backstage action fill this fashion week at Concept to support Studio DNA Salon. I'm a big fan of A Fine Frenzy who will be performing at the event too!!! The night is just going to be filled with Hollywood's finest with "E" personalities Jason Kennedy and Giulanna Rucic hosting, did I mention "E" News will be featuring the event the following Tuesday to celebrate World Water Day. Last year the event brought out Catt Sadler, Chyler Leigh, Nathan West, DeSean Jackson, Ian Johnson, Jason Biggs, Jenny Mollen Biggs, Lil' Zane, Matt Dallas, Robert Buckley Shannon Lucio, Tim Kash, Vanessa Lengles, Quddus, Samantha Mullen and Elliott Yamin.

The event is being held at a beautiful estate in Beverly Hills on Friday, March 18th at 8pm. There will be appetizers, cocktails, a live auction, and an African experience where you can actually pump a well and see what it is like for so many people around the world. Fashion: A Love Affair with Rodarte Fall 2011

Obsessed with Rodarte Fall 2011 Collection:

Time and time again Rodarte has taken me into a fashionable dream state where I'm captivated and can't help but stare. The Fall 2011 collection took me even deeper into my inner fashionably obsessed and brought out the young, innocent girl but one with modern tailoring on the back of a vintage inspired style, but with pose and strength. I absolutely love the long, floor length coats and dresses, especially with the dark heavy boots. It almost reminds me of that scene in Pride and Prejudice where Keira Knightley walks to Mr. Darcy's manner wearing a long dress with a long heavy coat and big boots almost pounding through the mud. Needless to say I adore the romantic touch with a strong femininity. It is very much a version of modern woman I enjoy - soft yet strong.

I believe next fall/winter we will be seeing lots of long hem lines and more line skirts. Especially paired with dark heavy boots. The long dress with a long coat and boots will probably be walking the snowy streets of New York for sure. In California we already love a long maxi dress year around so a long coat will be a nice change to see on the streets. Another style trend I like is the tailored high waistline skinny trouser with a cropped sweater, completed with a black ankle boot, perfect for a busy day at any office. I also can't get over the color palette. It really is seasonal in a sense but the textures and layering make it fall/winter. Loving the dark powder blue tights as well!

A Love Affair: Lingerie

For the Love of Lingerie - Happy Valentine's Day!!!!

I don't need an excuse to obsess over Lingerie or wear it but Valentine's Day seems like it might be a bit more appropriate to discuss it. Honestly, I love lingerie and think women should wear more of it and not just in the bedroom and not just for men but for ourselves. There is nothing wrong with feeling sexy in your own skin and celebrating it. I incorporate lingerie into my wardrobe all the time but not just the typical bra and panties, mainly my vintage slip pieces and I use them for layering, so you only see a little piece of silk or lace. Also lingerie should NEVER be worn as a dress for a night out. That is a very fine line to cross and should not be attempted without professional styling advice. I believe real lingerie should be classic and tasteful, not pastie and crotchless panties, nothing about that says "Lady" to me.

My favorite LA designer to get either classic vintage or vintage inspired lingerie from is designer Juel Park. They opened their doors in 1929 and have dressed the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Barbara Streisand, Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Lucille Ball, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Mae West, Grace Kelly, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Lauren Bacall, just to name a few. They do custom pieces or they have a set collection, I'm absolutely obsessed with the silk shorts. And to give away a little bit of insider information they also have an extensive collection of vintage pieces that were designed with stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Katherine Hepburn in mind. Perfect for the girl who has everything because nothing says "I love you" better then a one of a kind vintage piece of lingerie.

My second choice for Lingerie is Agent Provocateur but their piece points are way beyond my budget. Lastly, I recently discovered this great blog called the Lingerie Addict which I think is very well done and great for a woman needing any lingerie advice. I'm always available too!

Styling: Wardrobe Pulls

Defining the Modern Fashion Stylist - What is a wardrobe pull?

One might say it's a habit for me to document my experiences with a camera, I prefer taking photos but I'm really trying to get back into video again. So recently I styled a photo shoot for an up and coming actress, Janelle Ortiz, she has a Disney movie called "Prom" coming out in April of this year. While doing wardrobe pulls for her shoot I took a couple photos of the showrooms, I have some behind the scenes photos from the shoot that I've posted too. Honestly, after working with Janelle I can't wait to see her on the big screen, she has starlet written all over her and she is super sweet.

So lets talk about "Wardrobe Pulls," best defined as selecting wardrobe or garments from a showroom for the purpose of styling a fashion editorial or celebrity. Lets go through the steps together! After receiving confirmation for the shoot date and location my first step are as follows...

1. Email: showrooms and request approvals to pull from designers in their showroom for the specific shoot.

2. Logistics: I typically hear back from showrooms that day or the next day and schedule back to back appointment to pull from them either the day before or a couple days before the shoot. Most showrooms open around 9am and close at 5pm so if you're bouncing all over LA you can typically hit up about 5 or 6 showrooms. Ok don't forget about traffic in LA, I sometimes start in Santa Monica and then make a big loop thru Hollywood to Downtown LA then back up Wilshire, it depends on where I'm pulling from and its really a very well coordinated dance for it to be efficient.

3. Pulling: A day of pulls is more like a great shopping work out, you get out of the car, walk into the showroom, say your greetings, view the lines, select your choices, they approve and pack up, you lug everything to your car and then repeat five or six more times. It's a work out!

4. Returns: Within a couple days or the day after the shoot, I like to return the product, returns take less time because your not filtering through designer collections, its more like a drop and go. But I can't stress enough how important it is that you return the garments in the manner you received them in and too double check all product before you pack up after the shoot. Showrooms will take note if you continuously return the wrong things to them. If a garment gets dirty, which happens, I ask the showroom rep first if they would prefer I take it to my dry cleaner or wherever they prefer.

Daryl Henderson is more like a brother to me and I do love him dearly as a person. In all honesty my love affair is not with Daryl but with his photography. Granted I love working with him but a recent editor who published his work said it best, "Daryl's work speaks for itself", a gift of talent. Having that visual eye is the true gift, training is essential but an innate ability is key in any artistic field.

Daryl Henderson has the unique ability to capture the essence of people. Whether on location or in the studio, Daryl's vision for his body of work radiates through each image. Photography is more than a job for him.. its a purpose, a tool for self expression. And it shows, if a picture is worth a 1,000 words then Daryl's are worth much more.

Gypsy Queen: Harley Princess

Family is the tie that binds. It makes us who we are, it molds us and infringes on us. No person can be more lucky then to feel and embrace the love of a family. A family does not always have to be blood too but when blood is deep is shows. I may never have the greener side of the grass and I don't want such an illusion because not so many can share such love as we do as a family and I am forever greatful.

The photos are from my father (I seriously call him "father" and he typically responds with "yes daughter") and I out for a ride, what we consider our father daughter time together, on his motocycle which is a road king Harley Davidson (I was taught the difference at a young age) we were cruzing down Ortega Hwy and stopped for a burger at Hell's Kitchen. My dad is no hell's angels but lets say I get my strong work ethic and tough skin from him. Love you dad!

Styling: Musician Anna Madorsky

Styling a musician I feel is a different creative and collective process because you have to stress the artists image and brand, not just as an object but a stylish version that is true to the artist's character. The image has to read beyond the subject and into the person. A good connection between your client and team is extremely important to achieve this. Creating these images for musician Anna Madorsky was an exciting collaboration because of the team of people combined with the incorporation of period dressing, character development and set design, which is all so much fun. I have a heart for art direction and I love costume history, especially taking modern clothing and making them look and feel vintage. Anna's music has a Tori Amos folk music appeal so the setting of a vintage filled house with beloved treasures made for an exciting day and shoot!

These pictures were taken on my blackberry and are either from right before the Holidays or around Thanksgiving. Probably both. Either way I think I took a lot of pictures of food, its more about the presentation of the food that makes me want to capture it. Or its because I made it and use it as a chance to practice food styling. Or because it just looks so yummy! Everything else is me capturing those moments in life that make me smile and happy to be alive! I'm very lucky to have so many amazing people in my life, I wouldn't trade it for anything, not even billions of dollars because then life would be no fun without them. Real love can't be bought. Polaris Cosmetics Campaign

Defining the Modern Fashion Stylist: Prop Styling for Polaris Cosmetics Winter 2010 by Devon Poer. Photography by Efren Beltran. I started working with Polaris Cosmetics about two years ago and so far have styled their Fall 2009, Spring 2010 and Winter 2010 advertising campaigns. The first two we did using models so this time around I was excited to use just the product and props. There is something about prop styling that is more artistic and having a great connection with your photographer is so important because its a very intimate team effort. You are essentially creating a still life image, a work of art that carries a message which is also called marketing. The key to a great still life is to never let your prop over shadow your product, it must be a cohesive composition of your elements.

A bit of History...

During the Middle Ages in Ancient Greek and Roman art still life paintings were completed by artists using an arrangement of design elements within a composition of objects such as food, flowers, plants, rocks, shells or man-made items.

Styling Kit...

A must have item for this type of styling is museum wax or quakehold.
